Encountering Cultural Difference: Views on LGBT

A teenaged boy asked me what “a gay” looks like. I calmly told him that gay people look just the same as everyone else, and that I know many young gay people at home that I consider my closest friends. His jaw nearly dropped to the floor, and I realized why when he asked me if I was serious that I knew young gay people. He seemed to think that only older people could be gay and that they were far and few between. I set him straight about being gay in the states. He shook his head and asserted that I must be wrong – that all of America “must be wrong.” –Amanda, Ghana
